Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR)

What is Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR)?

Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) is an advanced medical procedure used to remove abnormal or precancerous tissue from the lining of the digestive tract. It is a highly effective, minimally invasive alternative to major surgery for treating early-stage tumors, large polyps, or suspicious lesions.

At Pramod Gastro & Liver Centre, Nandyal, EMR is performed using high-definition endoscopes. This allows us to remove early cancerous growths in the esophagus, stomach, or colon before they can spread deeper into the body, effectively preserving the organ and its function.

Why is EMR Performed?

EMR is recommended when abnormal tissue is detected that has a high potential to develop into cancer. Doctors may suggest EMR for:

  • Large Polyps: Growths in the colon or stomach that are too large for standard polypectomy.
  • Early GI Cancers: Cancerous cells limited to the inner lining (mucosa).
  • Barrett’s Esophagus: Removal of precancerous areas (dysplasia) in the esophagus.
  • Suspicious Lesions: Growths requiring complete removal for accurate laboratory analysis.

Conditions Treated

  • Early Esophageal and Stomach Cancer.
  • Complex Colon and Rectal Polyps.
  • Duodenal and Small Intestinal tumors.
  • Precancerous lesions detected during routine screening.

The Procedure: What to Expect

EMR is usually performed under sedation and takes between 30 to 60 minutes. The process involves:

  • Lifting the Lesion: A special saline solution is injected beneath the abnormal tissue to lift it away from the underlying muscle layer, making it safer to remove.
  • Resection: Using a specialized wire snare and electrocautery, the lesion is precisely "cut" and removed.
  • Retrieval: The tissue is collected and sent for detailed laboratory examination to confirm clear margins.

Benefits & Recovery

The primary benefit of EMR is the ability to treat early cancer without the need for traditional open or laparoscopic surgery. This means no external incisions, less pain, and a much faster recovery time.

  • Minimally Invasive: Performed entirely through the mouth or rectum.
  • Organ Preservation: Keeps the healthy part of the organ intact.
  • Quick Recovery: Most patients return home the same day or after a short observation.
