Endoscopic Dilatation

What is Endoscopic Dilatation?

Endoscopic dilatation is a therapeutic procedure used to widen narrowed areas of the digestive tract, particularly the esophagus. Narrowing of the digestive passage is known as a stricture, and it can make swallowing difficult or cause food to get stuck while eating.

This procedure is performed using an endoscope, a thin flexible tube with a camera and light that allows the doctor to visualize the digestive tract. Special instruments such as balloon dilators or dilating tubes are passed through the endoscope to gently stretch and widen the narrowed area.

At Pramod Gastro & Liver Centre, Nandyal, endoscopic dilatation is performed using advanced endoscopic equipment to safely treat strictures and improve digestive function without the need for major surgery.

Why is Endoscopic Dilatation Done?

Endoscopic dilatation is recommended when narrowing in the digestive tract causes symptoms that interfere with normal swallowing or digestion. Doctors may recommend this procedure for patients experiencing:

  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia).
  • Food getting stuck in the throat or chest.
  • Pain while swallowing.
  • Persistent vomiting due to obstruction.
  • Narrowing caused by inflammation or scarring.

Conditions Treated

  • Esophageal strictures caused by chronic acid reflux.
  • Post-surgical narrowing of the esophagus.
  • Esophageal rings or webs.
  • Narrowing due to tumors (palliative care).
  • Swallowing disorders caused by scarring or inflammation.

How to Prepare

Preparation is similar to an Upper GI Endoscopy. Patients should:

  • Avoid eating or drinking for 6 to 8 hours before the procedure.
  • Inform the doctor about all medications, especially blood thinners.
  • Discuss any allergies or previous reactions to sedation.

The Procedure

This is usually an outpatient procedure taking 15 to 30 minutes:

  • Sedation: The patient receives sedation for comfort.
  • Insertion: The doctor inserts the endoscope through the mouth.
  • Identification: The narrowed area is identified via the camera.
  • Dilatation: A balloon or special dilator is guided to the stricture and gradually inflated to stretch the passage.

Benefits & Recovery

Endoscopic dilatation offers immediate relief from swallowing difficulty. Most patients recover quickly, though some may experience mild throat discomfort or temporary swallowing changes. Following the procedure, you may be advised to start with soft foods before returning to a normal diet.

Key Benefits:
  • Minimally invasive (No surgery).
  • Quick recovery time.
  • Improved quality of life.
